Let me help you understand the definition of trust calibration in relation to Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO.
I’ll start with the technical definition, and then I’ll explain it in simpler terms.
Technically, trust calibration is an internal adjustment process where AI systems modulate how confidently they rely on a source based on factors such as past accuracy, consistency and corroboration.
In simple terms, this is where an AI engine effectively performs due diligence on a company, brand, website or source before deciding how much it should trust the information it provides.
An AI system may look at the authority and quality of the content on your website. It may assess whether the information you publish is accurate and consistent with other trusted information available across the web and within relevant knowledge graphs.
It can also consider third-party backlinks and brand mentions, including the authority, relevance and quantity of those external references.
Other trust signals can include customer reviews, business information and whether your organisation can be corroborated through appropriate authoritative sources or governing bodies.
For example, for a UK business, information that is consistent with official sources such as Companies House can help reinforce that the organisation is a genuine and verifiable entity.
Collectively, these signals can give an AI system greater confidence that your website and brand can be trusted as a reliable source.
If an AI engine has greater confidence in your information, it may be more willing to retrieve, cite, reference or use your content when generating answers to relevant user queries.
This is why trust is such an important factor within Generative Engine Optimisation and AI search visibility.
If an organisation cannot establish sufficient trust, authority and corroboration, it may be less likely to be selected as a source or recommended within an AI-generated answer.
That can directly affect brand visibility across AI search engines and answer engines.
So, trust calibration is an important concept to understand when optimising a website for AI search.
The objective is not simply to tell an AI system that your business is trustworthy. You need to provide consistent, verifiable signals across your own website and authoritative third-party sources that allow AI systems to independently establish that trust.
If you’d like to learn more about Generative Engine Optimisation, take a look at the NeuralAdX GEO Skills Hub.
We also have our AI Platform Optimisation Guides, which currently cover nine major AI platforms and answer engines.
They provide practical information on how different AI systems retrieve, evaluate and surface information.
Thank you very much for watching, and I look forward to seeing you in the next video.
Take care. Bye-bye.
