Let me help you understand the definition of query intent modelling.

I’ll start with the technical definition, and then I’ll explain it in simpler terms to make it easier to understand.

Query intent modelling is the process by which generative AI engines interpret the underlying informational, comparative, commercial, or transactional intent behind a user’s prompt in order to retrieve and prioritise the most relevant sources.

Breaking that down, the AI engine is essentially looking at the words used in the prompt and trying to understand the real intent behind the query.

Is the person trying to find something?

Are they trying to learn about a topic?

Are they comparing different companies or products?

Or are they looking for pricing before making a purchase decision?

For example, someone might enter the prompt:

Who are the cheapest plumbers in the UK?

The AI engine would recognise that the user has comparative and commercial intent.

Rather than simply returning general information about plumbing, the generative engine may retrieve information about multiple plumbing companies, including their pricing, services, reviews, locations, and other relevant factors.

It could then organise that information into a comparison, potentially including a table or ranked list, to help the user decide which plumbing company is most suitable for their needs.

That is essentially what query intent modelling means.

The AI engine is trying to understand not just the words in the prompt, but what the user actually wants to achieve.

Understanding query intent is also important for Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, because website content that clearly satisfies different types of user intent has a better opportunity to be retrieved, understood, prioritised, and surfaced by AI search and answer engines.

I hope that makes the definition of query intent modelling a little easier to understand.

As always, thank you very much for watching.

I look forward to seeing you in the next video.

Take care.

Bye-bye.
