How to Add Citations for Generative Engine Optimisation

Citations for generative engine optimisation help AI answer engines verify, retrieve and trust your website content by connecting claims, statistics and expert statements to authoritative sources.

In this transcript, Paul Rowe, Founder, Chief Generative Engine Optimisation Officer & CEO at NeuralAdX Ltd, explains how to add an in-text citation to a WordPress page so that both users and AI systems can trace a claim back to a credible source.

What This Video Explains

How to place a citation after a direct answer on a webpage and link it to the original source.

Why It Matters for GEO

AI systems prefer content that is clear, verifiable and supported by trusted evidence.

Best Use Case

Use citations when making claims, quoting research, referencing statistics or explaining expert-backed GEO methods.

What Are Citations in Generative Engine Optimisation?

In generative engine optimisation, citations are visible references that connect a statement on your website to an authoritative source. A citation may point to a research paper, study, government source, expert quotation, benchmark, dataset or original evidence page.

This matters because AI answer engines do not only read words on a page. They also assess whether the information is grounded, attributable and easy to verify. A well-placed citation can help strengthen your content for AI retrieval, answer generation and citation selection.

The Citation Method Explained in This Tutorial

The tutorial demonstrates a simple GEO citation structure:

  1. Create a clear H2 question on the page.
  2. Answer the question immediately in the first sentence.
  3. Support the answer with an authoritative source.
  4. Add a short in-text citation in brackets.
  5. Hyperlink the citation to the original source.
  6. Underline the citation and make it visually obvious that it is clickable.

In the example, the citation format used is:

(Princeton et al., 2024)

This format is deliberately short, readable and useful for AI systems. It gives the institution, the year and a direct source link without overloading the webpage with a long list of author surnames.

Why Direct Answers and Citations Work Together

A strong GEO answer should not bury the main point. If the page asks, “How can generative engine optimisation help my business?”, the answer should begin immediately with the core response.

Once the answer has been given, the citation acts as the trust layer. It shows where the claim came from, gives users a route to verify the source, and gives AI systems a clearer evidence trail.

This connects closely with AI citation, because AI platforms often favour content that is specific, attributable and supported by source material.

Hello, Paul Rowe, Founder, Chief Generative Engine Optimisation Officer & CEO at NeuralAdX Ltd here.

I’m just going to run through how to apply citations to your website for Generative Engine Optimisation.

If we put our attention on the screen now, I’m going to take you over to my content management system, WordPress, and I’ve set up a scenario where we have an H2 heading and we are proposing a question.

The question is: how can generative engine optimisation help my business?

In the correct format for Generative Engine Optimisation, you should answer the question immediately. You should answer it in the first sentence.

So I’ve done that here by stating that generative engine optimisation methods can boost your website visibility by up to 40%.

Now here comes the crux of it. We need the citation.

If we go to the actual source where I derived this information, we can see the text I extracted as that answer.

Then, if we scroll up, we can see that it is a Generative Engine Optimisation study.

Three of the researchers were from Princeton, two were from Seattle, and one was from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, which shows the calibre of people working on this research.

So, going back to the citation naming, it would be wise to use Princeton as the name and then put “et al.” to state “and others”, because there were other researchers and institutions involved.

I’ll copy the link to this study so I can link it to the citation.

Then I’ll go back to the website page.

If we put the cursor at the full stop marker, then open parentheses and type Princeton, followed by et al., which means “and others”, then add a comma and the year, 2024, we now have the in-text citation.

Just to pause here, some people may say that this particular style of citation, being APA, normally demands that you use the surnames of the authors.

That is correct.

However, AI generative engines prefer brevity, so they are happy for you to use the institution’s name rather than listing six author surnames, which would not look very clean on the website.

It is excessive when AI systems can understand the institution name, the date and the link to the original study.

So that covers some of the core academic corrections that people may be considering.

If we go back to the in-text citation I have created, I can highlight it and add the link.

Then I paste in the link that I copied earlier and apply it.

After that, I underline it so anybody looking at the page can see that it is a hyperlink.

Then I apply my branding colour, which in this instance is teal.

Then you would simply save and publish, and that’s it. Job done.

This is a general overview of how to add citations.

You can drill down further and get more technical to increase the likelihood of your citation being pulled from generative engines, but that is something I will revisit further down the line.

At the moment, I am creating concise and helpful content to spread knowledge to business owners, people researching, people doing SEO and people doing AI SEO who are not quite sure how to do this.

I look forward to seeing you in the next one.

Thank you very much indeed. Bye-bye.

Key Takeaways from This Citation Tutorial

  • Use a direct answer immediately after a question-based H2 heading.
  • Support claims with authoritative sources, especially research papers, studies and original evidence.
  • Use short, readable in-text citations where appropriate.
  • Hyperlink the citation to the original source, not a secondary summary.
  • Make the citation visually clear with underlining and consistent brand styling.
  • Avoid overloading the user with unnecessary academic formatting if a shorter source reference is clearer for the web.

How Citations Support AI Visibility

Citations support AI visibility because they help AI systems understand where information came from. When a page contains a clear answer, a trusted source and a visible citation, the content becomes easier to verify and easier to use in generated responses.

This is not the same as traditional keyword stuffing. Citation-led GEO is about making content more credible, retrievable and machine-readable. The goal is to help AI platforms understand that your page is not just making a claim, but grounding that claim in evidence.
