AI Citation

« Back to Glossary Index

A direct reference, quotation, or attribution made by a generative AI system to a specific brand, website, or page when answering a user query, indicating that the source was retrieved and trusted during response generation.

Hello and welcome back. In this video, I’m going to cover three things.
First, I’ll provide the definition of AI citation.
Then I’ll explain it in layman’s terms, so it’s easier to understand.
And finally, I’ll explain what you can do to increase the chances of your website or online content being cited by AI engines, also known as receiving an AI citation.
So, starting with the definition.
An AI citation is a direct reference, quotation, or attribution made by a generative AI system to a specific brand, website, or web page when answering a user query, indicating that the source was retrieved and trusted during response generation.
Now, in simple terms.
When you receive an answer from an AI system, such as an AI chatbot, whether that’s Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or Google AI Mode, and within that answer there is a named company, a referenced domain, or a link to a specific web page, that is what is classified as an AI citation.
So now, in order to achieve an AI citation, your website first needs to have a baseline level of search engine optimisation. This means it needs to be indexed by search engines such as Google and Bing. However, equally, if not more importantly, you need to have generative engine optimisation applied to your content.
Generative engine optimisation involves multiple criteria that your content must meet in order for AI systems to qualify it as a trusted source and cite it when responding to user queries.
If you’d like more information about generative engine optimisation, the link below this video in the description takes you to our website. From there, you can access our GEO resources, which explain the core principles of generative engine optimisation.
We also provide additional resources showing how to optimise your website for different AI platforms, including Google AI Mode, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.
I hope you find these resources helpful. They are completely free of charge.
If you have any questions or queries on this topic, feel free to leave a comment below, and I’ll do my best to get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you very much for watching. Bye bye for now.

AI citations become meaningful only when they occur repeatedly and persist over time rather than appearing as one-off mentions. Learn how citation stability explains whether AI citations represent durable trust or temporary visibility.
