Let me help you understand the definition of semantic relevance scoring in generative engine optimisation.
First, I’ll give you the technical definition, and then I’ll explain it in simpler terms with a practical example.
Semantic relevance scoring is a mechanism used by generative engines to retrieve and rank sources based on how closely the meaning of the content aligns with the user’s query, rather than relying only on exact keyword matching.
In generative engine optimisation, or GEO, this helps explain why a page that genuinely answers the intent behind a prompt can outperform a page that simply repeats the same keywords.
It is essentially about meaning match, topical relevance and how useful the content is for answering the user’s question during the retrieval process.
This terminology is also useful when understanding some of the differences between traditional SEO and GEO.
Historically, SEO placed greater emphasis on keywords, exact-match phrases and ensuring important search terms appeared in relevant parts of a page.
Modern SEO has become much more sophisticated and also considers meaning and search intent.
However, with GEO, we are specifically considering how AI systems interpret, retrieve and generate answers from information.
AI platforms are trying to understand what the user actually means and then identify sources that are semantically relevant to that intent.
Their objective is to retrieve information that can help them provide the most accurate, useful and contextually appropriate answer possible.
Let me give you a simple example of semantic relevance scoring.
Imagine you own a restaurant and have a webpage dedicated to one of your most popular steak dishes.
Rather than simply repeating phrases such as “best steak restaurant” throughout the page, you could provide genuinely useful information about that steak.
You might explain the cut of meat you use, where the ingredients are sourced, how the steak is prepared and what makes the dish distinctive.
You could include a video showing the steak being cooked.
You could provide information about customer reviews, restaurant awards or recognition the dish has received.
You could also clearly explain the restaurant’s location and the areas you serve.
All of those elements help establish semantic relevance for a prompt such as:
“What is the best steak restaurant near me?”
The location would obviously be an important part of that particular query, but hopefully you can see the wider principle.
Your content should comprehensively support the meaning and intent behind the questions your potential customers are asking.
At the same time, you want to avoid unnecessary topical drift.
If a page is supposed to answer a particular subject or user intent, the information surrounding that subject should remain closely related and useful.
That gives an AI retrieval system stronger signals about what the page is about, which questions it can answer and when that content may be relevant to retrieve.
That, in simple terms, is semantic relevance scoring and why it matters for generative engine optimisation.
